Ilay App
Empowering Tea Plantation Farmers with Digital Solutions
The Challenge
Oronium embarked on a mission to enhance the efficiency of tea plantation farmers by developing Ilay, a user-friendly digital platform designed to streamline the monitoring of daily tea leaf sales and improve communication with cooperative factories. The vision of this project was to bridge the gap between traditional record-keeping methods and modern digital solutions, ensuring better financial tracking and operational transparency.
Project Process & Timeline
Researched tea farming workflow patterns, offline connectivity drops in Wayanad/Bitherkad, and cooperative factory constraints.
Designed intuitive leaf harvest cards, real-time daily ledger tables, and instant statement notifications.
Audited interactions with local growers, integrated multi-language support, and completed final UI handoff.
Understanding User Insights
Through on-site field visits and mapping customer journeys, we identified three critical friction points in traditional record-keeping methods:
- Manual Discrepancies: Manual entry of sack and leaf weight deductions created disputes and confusion during payouts.
- Uncertain Collection Dates: Delayed notifications about tea leaf collection runs caused harvest spoilage in remote fields.
- Opaque Financial Ledgers: Lack of accessible monthly bills made financial tracking difficult for families reliant on seasonal yield.
Conducting UX research and workflow audits in local tea plantation cooperative networks.
Designing the System
Ilay is a digital platform that connects tea plantation farmers with cooperative factories. The application simplifies the monitoring of daily tea leaf sales, delivers real-time notifications about collection runs, and hosts monthly bills in an accessible local interface.
Overcoming Obstacles & Prototyping
Creating a interface for rural farmers with limited digital literacy meant replacing text-heavy dashboards with bold, color-coded status elements, large tap targets, and clear weights representation.
Real-time Daily Rates: Transparent logging of net tea weights and sack deductions.
Instant Statement Downloads: Auto-generated monthly bills for simple income tracking.
Design System & Colors
A brand color system was built around a high-contrast Forest Green, representing fresh organic harvest. Headings leverage premium Instrument Serif typography while structural content uses clean Inter sans-serif sizes.

Key Results & Summary
By transitioning manual paper passbooks to Ilay's digital ledger, cooperative tea societies dramatically reduced errors and built stronger trust with their farmer network.
